Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, re-tellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?
Well I'm strict when it comes to fanfics that jump into published books, no matter how good they are they need a good revision, an adaptation of the characters, because they are based on someone else's characters and I feel it's kinda hard to really own an idea that was based on someone else and that your characters and story are based 100% on it.
I do feel its different for re-tellings, re-tellings have an opportunity to loosely based their self's an really own the world that was based maybe in an old fairy tale or story. In my head a re-telling starts being loosely based on the story to the point that the author can take as much liberty with the story as he/she wants.
Similar ideas, how similar? Like when everyone suddenly wants to write about faeries or vampires? well that leaves the authors a large margin of space to play around with it's like comparing Twilight to The Morganville Vampires, the only thing they have in common is that they both have vampires... and that is all they share.
What do you think???

ReplyDeleteAgreed, both about vampires isn't a big deal as long as they do their own thing!

Rainy Day Reads
I agree. It depends on how similar they are. But originals are still the best.
ReplyDeleteHere's my FF.
Have a great day!
*New GFC follower. :)
Totally agree. While there are some stories that are very similar, others are not. I feel the same way about Fan Fiction, at least that it shouldn't be exactly the same, or the original author should get some credit too. New follower.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my FF
I completely agree! I enjoy the occasional fan fiction read, but when people actually go and publish theirs? Big no no. Honestly I think it's disrespectful to the actual author. Great answer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my my FF and following. Following back.
I think you explain the fanfiction part better then I did, thank you very much Liz :)
ReplyDeleteI completely agree! I absolutely love the Morganville Vampires series and Twilight and the story line of both of these books is completely different, which makes them unique. Having similar ideas within the story is perfectly fine because each author will have their own way of portraying these.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a massive fan of fanfic but I don't think someone should be allowed to publish fanfic thats basically exactly the same as the original book.
New follower via GFC :)
Samantha @ the secret life of a bookworm - Thanks for stopping by My FF
I'm glad you agree on how authors can each make the same idea their own as they focus on who the characters are and how the story goes :D
ReplyDeleteI also don't believe they should allow fanfics to be publish with out the necessary work that truly portrays the fanfic author ideas
I feel the same way: not big on fan fic but i like retellings if they're done well. New follower via GFC. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D
